A Real World Asset (RWA) is a traditional off-chain asset that has been tokenized on a blockchain so it can be owned, traded, and used in DeFi in fractional form.

Not every token is an RWA. For something to qualify as a genuine RWA, it must meet these core criteria:

1. Real-World Backing The token must represent a legal claim to an actual off-chain asset. This includes:

• U.S. Treasuries
• Private credit / loans
• Real estate
• Gold or other commodities
• Corporate bonds
• Equity in private companies

Purely on-chain tokens (like native cryptocurrencies or meme coins) do not qualify as RWAs.

2. Custody & Legal Structure A regulated entity (bank, trust, or special-purpose vehicle) must hold the underlying asset. Token holders must have enforceable legal rights to the asset or its cash flows.

3. Regulatory Compliance Most RWAs are structured as securities and comply with relevant laws (e.g., Reg D, Reg A+, or MiCA in Europe). Proper KYC/AML and investor protections are required.

5. Real Economic Value Many RWAs generate actual income (interest, rent, dividends) that flows to token holders. This distinguishes them from speculative tokens.

What Is NOT an RWA

• Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, or any native cryptocurrency

• Most NFT collections without real-world asset backing
